In June 1944, Constance Helmericks and her husband, Bud Helmericks, commenced a twenty-six-month trek across northern Alaska. Equipped only with rifles, fishnet, and a few supplies, the young couple paddled their homemade canoe downriver onto the Yukon River. Reaching the Koyukuk drainage, they turned north and pulled their outfit into the wild Brooks Range. We Live in the Arctic, Connie’s second acclaimed book, begins her classic trilogy about this remarkable odyssey. She writes candidly of cold, starvation, and the struggle to build a cabin and hunt for food as the haunting beauty of arctic winter descends. With breakup the following spring, the two decide to cross the mountains in search of nomadic people reported to live on the treeless North Coast.

Connie Helmericks, arctic adventurer and author, was a wild spirit who yearned for adventure in an era of obedient women. In 1941, when she was twenty-three, she persuaded her husband to leave Arizona for the Alaska wilds. Her successful books and their documentaries came later. She passed away in 1987.
