We Live in Alaska, by Constance Helmericks

Originally published in 1944, We Live in Alaska is the first book by acclaimed author, Constance Helmericks. At twenty-four, Connie and her young husband, Harmon “Bud” Helmericks, set off from Fairbanks, Alaska in a homemade canoe. Paddling down the Tanana and into the great Yukon River, they leave their known world behind. Five months later, they portage a hundred miles across muskeg and icing ponds to the Kuskokwim River where they battle shifting ice into the little town of Bethel near the Bering Sea. Along the journey they encounter Native Villages and isolated settlements, learning from experience and the kindness of strangers. Connie’s honest and lyrical voice depicts a changing Alaska and its endangered people during a pivotal moment in history. This complete edition of We Live in Alaska includes a preface by their daughter, Alaskan author Jean Aspen.

Connie Helmericks, arctic adventurer and author, was a wild spirit who yearned for adventure in an era of obedient women. In 1941, when she was twenty-three, she persuaded her husband to leave Arizona for the Alaska wilds. Her successful books and their documentaries came later. She passed away in 1987.
